Apple Scores With Digital Textbooks And App

4 February 2012: Apple is a leader in iPhones, iPhone accessories iPads, computers, and may as well become the leader in iBooks too. It recently unveiled its iBook 2 for the iPad app as well as the text books in the iBooks format.  Certainly, with the advent of the digital age, having text books in the iBook format is not something new but it is an exciting option for schools.

The digital textbooks are definitely engrossing for learners as there is the option for instant search and they are easy to navigate. The books allow you to create bookmarks, consult study cards, and add notes. You need to just drag your finger to highlight text. Besides, the student will have access to the latest information as the authors can update the material and keep it current.

Though the benefits of the multi-touch textbooks are many, there is still a degree of hesitancy as the books can crash. Apple says that it has a solution for that and a software will soon be available. If approved by their schools, one advantage of the iBooks is that they will no longer have to carry heavy textbooks to school. One further problem is that schools will have to approve the iBooks and that may not be easy because not all children can afford iPads.

Right now, Apple has very few textbooks for the iBooks 2 and if they wish to surge ahead of other companies like Kno and Inkling, which already produce some quality digital textbooks, they will need to pass many tests. Right now, the iBooks are available for high school children but Apple is eyeing college textbooks. It’s just a matter of time and we’ll know if the digital textbook market is as successful as the iPhone and iPhone accessories market.
