A Mobile phone battery that charges itself!

How many times has your phone died on you when you needed it most? Whenever you’re on the road, the mobile charger is pretty much up there amongst the list of most basic essentials like a toothbrush. Fortunately, Nokia has set out on a mission to tackle this aspect.

Nokia is in the process of developing a technology that would keep a phone battery perpetually charged by using ambient radio radiation.

Technology Review has reported that the Nokia Research Center (NRC) has already developed a prototype that can transform radio waves into electrical energy. Currently, RFID tags and crystal radios work on a similar principle, however, Nokia seems to have set its sights even higher. They are hoping to develop a wave catcher that is ten times more powerful than the present technology.

The primary objective of the NRC team is to develop a power harvester that could store up to 50 milliwatts of energy, which is more than the prototype’s current capacity of five milliwatts. According to the report, storage of 50 milliwatts of energy opens up a whole new world for a range of electronic devices such as MP3 players, which usually require about 100 milliwatts to operate.

Of course just like any revolutionary breakthrough, this isn’t going to be easy either; it will have to overcome some serious technical challenges relating to harvester efficiency. Despite this, members from the research team are hopeful that the new technology should be ready in about three to four years.

As great as this invention will prove to be, there does seem to be one down side to it — your age-old excuse “my phone battery died on me won’t work anymore”!
