Avencast: Rise of the Mage is Dungeons & Dragons and Harry Potter combined. The game derives themes from them in its plot line but it is not an action adventure as much as it is a puzzle game. This role-playing game has very simple objectives which are inlaid with cryptic puzzles.
The game has stunning visuals which are somewhat outdated. It is reminiscent of the visual appeal that is felt in Neverwinter Nights. The characters look rigid and the environment is nothing special. But the amazing lighting gives the game an underlying eerie appeal.
The game begins with a Harry Potter start with you playing a teenage mage doing chores for various teachers by using you magical abilities. The voice acting is good considering the game was created by Austrians. The game does not have heavy one-to-one combats and the trick is to remember that you are not a warrior but a mage and should your spells smartly.
Killing monsters is not easy and you have to hit them with the heavy weapons and spells a number of times before they actually die. The camera work is tricky and the mouse and keyboard combo makes the game very challenging to play considering you are in a role-playing game.
The game promises a lot of intelligent mazes and puzzles and although it has its own unique set of problems, it’s still a pity that the game has not been appreciated more.
