Sony patents new Motion Control System

We saw Sony unveil the LED wand motion controller for PlayStation 3. The wand works in tandem with the EyeToy camera to bring motion control technology to the PlayStation 3 platform. In addition to that, Sony has developed another technology that lets us use common objects like sticks as motion controllers to play suitable games. The technology works with a camera that can dynamically plot any real-world object into a virtual object corresponding to the controller in game. Sony recently patented this technology explaining its structure and functioning with neat and self-explanatory diagrams. In the information filed with the patent, Sony has stated that the system is compatible with virtually any real-world object like book, coffee mugs, bottles, books, etc. All medium size- movable objects can be used as controllers with the technology. This means in a baseball game, an actual bat can be used with the controller and with tennis game, real-life racquet can be used. Gamers will no more need to buy many controllers for different games. The patent application explains the use of a “virtual world sword” with a U-shaped block. When the U-shaped block is held up, the sword is “on” and vice versa. The system resembles Microsoft’s Project Natal in some aspects. The best feature of the system is that players can use whatever available at the moment and they won’t have to buy any extra accessory for playing a game. For example, instead of connecting steering wheel, they can use simple plate to serve the purpose.
