An Xd-picture card is also known as the extreme digital picture card. The Xd-picture card is one of the types of flash memory cards that are used in the digital cameras. The purpose of these Xd-picture cards or the flash memory cards is to store and retrieve the pictures taken using the digital cameras.
Most of the digital cameras available in the market come with low capacity Xd-pictures cards but even these low capacity Xd-picture cards are faster than some memory sticks. The specifications for manufacturing these Xd-picture cards are available only with two companies that developed these cards – Olympus and Fujifilm. These two companies usually charge other companies for sharing the technical information and other required detailed specifications so that they are able to produce devices compatible with Xd-picture cards.
There are three generations for the Xd-picture cards. The first generation of the cards contains the cards with the capacities ranging from 16 MB to 2 GB. This generation is also known as the Type S or the standards cards. The second generation of the Xd-picture card is known as the Type M or multi level cells. The second generation contains the Xd-picture cards that have the capacity of up to 8GB.
In spite of these high speeds, the Xd-picture cards have not been able to able to keep pace with the other memory devices. Today, there are many other devices such as the Compact Flash cards and SD that have taken the place of an Xd-picture card.
